Vivaldi Biosciences Granted U.S. Patent for Nasal Spray Combination Vaccine for Influenza and COVID-19
FORT COLLINS, Colorado and VIENNA, Austria – September 1, 2026 – Vivaldi Biosciences Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing nasal spray vaccines for viral respiratory diseases, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent Number 12,708,663 B2 for its Delta-19 combination vaccine candidate for broad protection against influenza and COVID-19.
Delta-19 uses Vivaldi Biosciences’ Delta NS1 technology platform, which also is the basis for the company’s clinical-stage nasal spray vaccine candidates: DeltaFLU, for broad protection against influenza, and DelNS1 H5N1, for pandemic preparedness and protection against influenza A/H5N1. Delta NS1 vaccine candidates are based on genetically modified influenza virus strains from which the NS1 gene has been deleted (DelNS1) to generate nasal spray vaccines designed to induce a broadly protective immune response without replicating or forming viral progeny.
Most virus attenuation strategies for vaccine development decrease replication efficiency and thus decrease immune responses to the virus. Attenuation by deletion of NS1 increases immunogenicity. DelNS1 vaccine strains rapidly induce the immune signalling protein interferon and broadly cross-reactive antibodies in the upper respiratory tract to confer protection at the point of infection and potentially block virus transmission. Further, DelNS1 vaccines induce cross-reactive systemic antibodies, and T cells that target conserved internal viral proteins and enable a rapid response to re-infection.
Delta-19 expresses the spike protein receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, along with influenza virus antigens. Preliminary proof of concept studies in a ferret model demonstrated high neutralizing antibody levels for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza antigens, and protected 100% of the immunized animals against challenge with a wild-type strain of SARS-CoV-2. The vaccine candidate shows excellent growth in Vivaldi’s proprietary Vero cell-based vaccine manufacturing system.
